“I breathe slowly, and my mind follows my breath.”
Notice the order here. Breath comes first and the mind is asked only to "follow" it, not to calm down on command. A more direct line might tell the mind to slow, which rarely works, because a busy mind tends to resist direct orders. Giving it something simple to trail after, rather than something to obey, is an easier ask, and it does not require the mind to agree with anything first.
