Affirmations and manifestation are so often mentioned in the same breath, and that is how confusion can start. One of them is a practice that you can do right now, today. The other is a much bigger claim about how the world, or the universe, works.
Affirmations and manifestation get mentioned together so often that many people think they are the same thing, even though they are not. They are related, and they can work alongside each other, but they are doing different jobs. Just don't mix them up, and if you do, that may be why affirmations sometimes get a bad name. I'll explain more as we go along.
So here's the short version, and then we'll go into it in more depth.
An affirmation is a practical thing that you say and then act on. Manifestation is a broader belief that focusing on what you want helps to bring it about. One of them is a habit, and the other is a worldview.
What an affirmation actually is
An affirmation is a short, deliberate statement in the present tense, believable, and pointed at something that you can influence. So it's not a spell, it's not magic, it's not a wish. It's founded in scientific fact. Here are some links on how to write an affirmation and on the research behind affirmations.
What people mean by manifestation
What people mean by manifestation is often called the law of attraction, or visualisation and vision boards. Like attracts like, that kind of thing. Some of it is grounded, clear focus changes what you notice and do, and some of it isn't. Just thinking hard about money isn't enough on its own. There are other things that you would need to do as well.
Where they overlap
They do overlap, because both start with your attention. An affirmation is basically a sentence-sized, stripped-down version, if you want to think of it that way.
So what's the honest difference?
Well, here's the line that matters. An affirmation is something that you can do and back up with action. Manifestation, in its popular form, suggests that the focusing itself is the work. It isn't, though. The focusing is the start of the work. If you want to attract things into your life, you also have to do something.
So my take on this is very simple. If I want to manifest something in my life, I have to start by believing that it will come into my life, or I will never take any action at all to make it happen. So there's an overlap here with affirmations. Once I accept and believe that something can come into my life, whether it's a new job, as I've done in the past, or better health, or more money, I have a couple of choices. I can sit back and do nothing, or I can take the steps towards that new reality that I'm engaging with.
The other thing I can do is become more aware and notice the opportunities that are around me. So by dealing with the law of attraction and manifestation, and becoming aware of opportunities, I may see things that I would otherwise miss, because I didn't think they were possible. This is a little bit like the issue I mentioned when talking about chaos in another article.
And this is also one of the reasons why a badly written affirmation will fail. If you happen to know that the claim you are making in the affirmation is a total lie, then all you're doing is reminding yourself that it's a lie, no matter how many times you repeat it. So the first thing is to make sure that what you are thinking about, whether affirmations or manifestation, is something that could be true for you.
It is true, for example, that we can all make more money. We just have to do the things that work. It is true that we can all improve our health, no matter where we start. Even small improvements count. It is true that we can have better relationships by working on them. But if you believe that none of these things is true, then affirmations and manifestation cannot work for you anyway.
Can you use them together?
Yes, I think you can. I think you can visualise and set the direction that you want to move towards. And I think it's then a really good thing to turn that into an affirmation, or a set of affirmations, attached to a daily habit. That's what I've been doing for a long time.
The bottom line
Manifestation is a belief, and affirmations are basically small, testable practices that work either way. You can take the affirmation, because it comes with something to do, and it primes your brain towards making you do the things that lead to the end result. And that brain-priming part is really important.
